Aberlour Scotch Whisky Arrives in Singapore

From August 2015, the full range of Aberlour whiskies will be available in Singapore.

The range, which encompasses the 12YO, 16YO, 18YO, and the A’bunadh, will be made available in selected whisky bars, cocktail bars and wine shops.

Aberlour, which is Gaelic for “mouth of the chattering burn”, has its roots in a story of which ancient Celtic druids followed the sounds of a wild mountain burn or stream, called the Lour, and settled at where the stream met the river Spey.

Aberlour is different from many distilleries in the sense that it uses a double cask maturation process. For the most part, fresh distillate from the stills are stored and aged in both ex-Oloroso sherry and ex-bourbon casks throughout its production, and according to Aberlour, for at least 10 years.

As the quality of the sherry butts are crucial to Aberlour’s house style, they take great care in the selection of ex-sherry butts. Aberlour says they’ve worked closely with the same artisan from Jerez, Spain since 1985, and hence, can choose the type of sherry that will be matured in each cask, influence the mix of grapes used, and even sometimes to the extent of deciding how long the sherry will be matured. For them, this selection process takes between 18 to 24 months.

Ex-bourbon oak barrels will infuse it contents with strong notes of sweet vanilla, while the ex-sherry butts will add spicy, full-bodied fruitiness to the spirit it holds, as well as imparting a distinctively dark colour. Upon maturation at the desired age, the two types of spirits are blended according to Aberlour’s house style.

Official Tasting Notes

Aberlour 12YO
Aberlour 12The 12 year-old expression is a fine example of how the distinctively crisp, citrus character of Aberlour’s raw spirit is deftly softened by double cask maturation. Traditional oak and seasoned Sherry butts are both used to great effect, as the mellowed spirits within are combined to deliver a subtly balanced flavour.

Nose Very soft and rounded with fruity notes of red apples
Palate Sherried character and fruity aromas balanced with a rich chocolate, toffee, cinnamon and ginger spiciness
Finish Warming and lingering. Sweet and very slightly spicy

Aberlour 16YO
Aberlour 16With the depth and complexity that comes from being matured for 16 years in a combination of first fill oak Bourbon casks and the finest Sherry butts, this expression’s warm fruity notes are enriched by an engagingly spicy sweetness.

Nose
Rich, dry scented floral and sweet raisin aromas with spicy nuttiness
Palate Smooth, full, sweet floral and spicy flavours with a soft plum fruitiness and gentle oakiness
Finish Long, warm, spicy fruitiness

Aberlour 18 YO
Aberlour 18Greater age adds body and a rich raisin character to Aberlour’s characteristic depth and spiciness. Matured in the highest quality casks, where it develops deep Bourbon and Oloroso Sherry flavours, this is the richest and most indulgent Aberlour expression. Perfect in structure and memorably eloquent.

Nose
Rich and complex, notes of toffee and butterscotch combine with ripe peach and bitter orange
Palate Perfect structure. Initial notes of soft apricot and cream are offset by developing flavours of old leather and oak with a touch of honey
Finish Very long and balanced, progresses from crème brulee to a gentle oak flourish

Aberlour A’bunadh
Aberlour AbunadhWith each batch carefully made by hand, Aberlour A’bunadh is a unique cask strength whisky that has achieved cult status among whisky connoisseurs. Meaning ‘the original’ in Gaelic, A’bunadh is made in homage to Aberlour’s founder, James Fleming, using only traditional methods without chill filtration or other modern processes. The result is a heavier, creamier single malt than most have ever experienced – memorably flavoursome, with an intense raisin character.

Nose
Aromas of mixed spices, praline and spiced orange harmonising with rich, deep notes of Oloroso sherry
Palate Orange, black cherries, dried fruit and ginger spiked with dark bitter chocolate and enriched with sherry and oak. Full bodied and creamy
Finish Robust and intense with bitter-sweet notes of exotic spices, dark chocolate and oak
