AIA Live Better Study 2024: Mental Health Takes Center Stage in Singapore
The latest findings from the AIA Live Better Study 2024 reveal a pressing need for enhanced mental health support in Singapore.
The study highlights that mental health remains a critical concern for many Singaporeans.
Mental Health: A Growing Priority
According to the study, 1 in 2 Singaporeans believe that more needs to be done to boost mental health resources and support. This sentiment underscores the importance of mental wellness as a key component of holistic health, alongside physical, financial, social, and spiritual well-being.
The State of Mental Wellness
The study found that 51 percent of Singaporeans now prioritise mental wellness more than they did before the pandemic.
However, 59 percent feel they need more resources or support, with affordability, accessibility, and workplace initiatives identified as key areas needing improvement.
Overcoming Stigma and Barriers
Despite the growing awareness, stigma remains a significant barrier. Approximately 58 percent of Singaporeans feel there is still a stigma associated with mental health, with this figure rising to 73 percent among Gen Zs. High costs and a belief that professional help is unnecessary are also major obstacles.
Teleconsultation emerges as a promising alternative, with 47 percent of Singaporeans expressing a high likelihood of seeking mental health help through this medium. The convenience, quick access during crises, and flexible scheduling are seen as major benefits.
Financial and Physical Wellness
The study also sheds light on financial and physical wellness. While 58 percent of Singaporeans prioritise long-term financial readiness, nearly 70 percent struggle to achieve financial wellness.
On the physical wellness front, 60 percent of Singaporeans rate their fitness levels between 7-10 out of 10. However, only 56 percent are committed to regular health check-ups.
AIA Vitality, part of the AIA Health360 program, encourages proactive health management by rewarding members for achieving fitness milestones.
Social and Spiritual Well-being
Social and spiritual wellness have remained stable, with 3 in 5 Singaporeans feeling positive about these aspects of their lives.
The AIA Live Better Study 2024 highlights the need for a concerted effort from both the public and private sectors to enhance mental health support in Singapore. As the nation grapples with the challenges of modern life, a holistic approach to wellness is more important than ever.
