Planning a trip to Hong Kong this year end? Here are some of the top highlights to check out when travelling to the island of Lantau.

This year, Lantau Development Alliance (LaDA) presents Hong Kong with Lantau Fiesta 2015 – Lantau Adventure, featuring a plethora of cultural experiences on the island of Lantau, covering over 10 wonders and a variety of seasonal events. Travellers can look forward to an adventurous ride through the outlying island.

Located away from the urban areas of Hong Kong, Lantau features some of Hong Kong’s best natural wonders which include The Big Buddha – the largest seated outdoor bronze Buddha; Discovery Bay – a South European resort-style residential community; Hong Kong Disneyland; Ngong Ping 360 – the longest bi-cable ropeway cable car experience; and Tai O Heritage Hotel, among many others.

The island is also connected with Macau and mainland China via the SkyPier at Hong Kong International Airport.

Cultural

Tai O, the Oriental Venice

Known as the Oriental Venice, Tai O is Hong Kong’s most famous fishing village which still preserves many of its original features. Visitors can catch a glimpse of the local fishermen’s unique stilt houses set on sturdy wooden stilts, and enjoy the view of its surrounding nature.

The Big Buddha

Resting atop  a three-storey pedestal, the renowned seated outdoor bronze Buddha that took 12 years to complete stands at 34 metres tall and weighs over 250 tonnes. Travellers can also visit the Remembrance Hall, which houses some of the most sacred relics of Buddha.

Discovery Bay

Marked by a continental European atmosphere, Discovery Bay is a car-free, green community that features an array of leisure facilities. These include open-air plazas, restaurants, parks, a beach and an extensive green area. Visitors looking to see a tranquil side of Hong Kong can visit the Discovery Bay, which will also be hosting some festive events for the month of December.

Running from now to 3 January 2016, be sure to check out the Discovery Bay Twinkling Christmas event which will see the residential community transform into a party venue adorned with Christmas lights. The waterfront promenade by the seaside restaurants will turn into a romantic time capsule where couples can enjoy a romantic candle-lit dinner.

Nature

Ngong Ping 360

As the longest bi-cable ropeway in Asia, the Ngong Ping 360 connects Lantau to the city centre of Tung Chung and Ngong Ping. During this 25-minute journey, travellers can enjoy stunning views of the South China Sea as well as a panoramic view of the Lantau North Country Park.

From now to 31 January 2016, visitors can also check out the Ip Man Experience Hall at Stage 360, which features selected scenes, costumes of the main casts and a range of paraphernalia as part of a collaboration with the new film, Ip Man 3. Using augmented reality (AR) technology to emulate Ip Man’s world, guests can also interact with life-sized 3D images of the movie’s leading characters when they download the free Ip Man 3 smartphone app.
