Fight Colorectal Cancer With a Simple Step: #My1stColonoscopy Campaign Returns
The 365 Cancer Prevention Society (365CPS) is back with its fourth annual #My1stColonoscopy campaign, providing free colonoscopy screenings for lower-income Singaporeans aged 45 to 70.
Running from now until 30 April 2025, this initiative, in collaboration with Icon Cancer Centre, breaks down financial barriers to protect lives from one of Singapore’s most common cancers.
Colorectal Cancer: A Silent but Deadly Threat
Colorectal cancer, the second most common cancer in both men and women in Singapore, remains a silent menace. It often presents no early symptoms, leaving many unaware until it’s too late. But when caught early, it is not only preventable but also highly treatable, with survival rates soaring by over 70 percent.
Symptoms, when they appear, may include rectal bleeding, unexplained weight loss, and persistent abdominal discomfort. Regular screenings also identify and remove pre-cancerous polyps before they have the chance to become cancerous. It’s not just detection—it’s prevention.
Access to Early Detection Saves Lives
“Early detection saves lives. Diagnosing colorectal cancer in its early stages can make a life-changing difference,” says Andrew Soh, Assistant Director at 365CPS. The campaign launched in 2022 and continues to grow, ensuring effective screenings remain accessible to the underserved.
Beyond screenings, diet and lifestyle play a key role. As Jocelyn Fong, Senior Dietitian at 365CPS, emphasises, “A balanced, fiber-rich diet not only lowers the risk of developing colorectal cancer but also enhances recovery and overall health for those undergoing treatment.”
