By  |  0 Comments

We learn from Zuji that people are willing to give up shopping to travel, that we can earn Starwood Preferred Guest points when taking an Uber and a new reason to take out that new DSLR camera you have just bought – to bring to the Chelsea Flower Show and the Alps.

80% of Singapore-based travellers would sacrifice shopping for travel

The Zuji-dex fourth travel insights report profiles the habits and preferences of Singapore-based travellers. 328 people participated in the poll, of which 164 were aged between 18 to 24 years old and categorised as ‘grads’, while the remaining 164 were aged 25 – 34 years old and considered ‘post-grads’.

The poll asked participants a series of questions detailing the kinds of trips they go on when travelling without their parents.

Active agers take note, some of the findings by Zuji might surprise you! Here are the findings presented in no order of priority and how you can use the tips to help with the younger ones at home.

Time to change the incentive scheme at home

  • 80 percent of travellers prefer to sacrifice shopping for a year, rather than travel
  • Grads miss the free stuff the most when travelling without parents, with 20 percent loving having everything paid for. The sentimental post-grads long for the good old family bonding times, with close to 20 percent voting it as their favourite past time

Help guide them about saving for their holidays

  • 22 percent of Grad travellers want independence, and would pay for a  hostel or budget hotel room, rather than stay family and friends in their destination (5 percent)
  • 30 percent of Singapore’s 25-34 year old travellers would never skimp on comfortable surroundings and only stay in 4+ star lodging
  • S$500 is the sweet spot for spending on a three – four day holiday (49 percent)
  • Europe is the top destination (53 percent) while Southeast Asia was the least favourite destination with only three percent of the vote

Tell them about appreciating experiences gained when travelling

  • When booking trips, 20 percent of Singapore-based grads travel to try new experiences that may be frowned upon closer to home
  • 25 percent of post-grads are most interested in the destination’s different culture and customs
  • When packing luggage, grads and post-grads would rather look sloppy than forget their portable devices (25 percent) or their credit card essentials (59 percent). Eight percent placed fashion at the least of their list of important items, followed by comfort items like teddies (eight percent)
  • 40 percent of respondents agreed they would not get a tattoo when travelling
