The Gunong Sayang Association, an organisation promoting Peranakan activities through music, drama and dance will be hosting its annual Wayang Peranakan in October.

This event dates back to 1986 and serves to bring the Peranakan community together to celebrate and embrace their heritage. To mark the association’s 105th anniversary, the Gunong Sayang Association will perform Udang Sebalek Batu (The Hidden Truth) as the highlight for this year’s Wayang Peranakan.

Baba Walter Woon, Professor of Law at National University of Singapore and Patron of GSA shares: “Gunong Sayang Association is at the forefront of preserving and presenting Baba culture to the public through its annual Wayang Peranakan. Through the medium of drama, music, dance and language young Singaporeans can be made aware of the richness of our Straits Chinese heritage.”

Led by experienced theatre performers Nyonya Audrey Tan and Baba Eugene Tay, Udang Sebalek Batu tells the tale of Daisy Tan and Jeff Koh, who despite their different family backgrounds, grew up from childhood mates to become lovers.

Directed by Baba Tony Quek, and written by Baba Alvin Teo, Udang Sebalek Batu will provide the audience with a poignant and insightful look into Peranakan traditions in contemporary Singapore. The performance will be accompanied by Huqin quintet, StringWerkz. There will also be a curated selection of Peranakan booths at the Wayang Peranakan, where one can pick up kueh-‐kuehs alongside batik textiles.

Udang Sebalek Batu will run from 30 – 31 October 2015 at The Drama Centre. Tickets are available on SISTIC.
