Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok Celebrates 140 Years With Bespoke Events

In celebration of its 140th anniversary, Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok will roll out a series of bespoke music, fashion, art and culinary events throughout the year.

Built in 1876, Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok (then known as The Oriental) was the first luxury hotel in the Kingdom of Siam. The legendary hotel has since welcomed numerous heads of state, captains of industry and a host of world renowned writers and celebrities over the years. The hotel has recently completed a comprehensive renovation of the historic Authors’ and Garden Wings, offering enhanced facilities and services at the hotel.

To commemorate the rich history of the hotel, Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok will roll out a series of exciting events starting this May.

Culinary events

Known for introducing Michelin starred chefs to Thailand back in the mid-1970s, the hotel continues to maintain this tradition this year with commemorative collaborations at its dining venues. From 24 to 28 May, two-star Michelin Chef José Avillez will present his exceptional cuisine at Lord Jim’s, followed by three-star Michelin Chef Diego Oka from 23 to 26 June. From 4 to 9 July, two-star Michelin Chef Alain Solivérès will be collaborating with the highly acclaimed Le Normandie French fine dining restaurant; while three-star Michelin Chef Sébastian Bras will visit from 12 to 17 December.

On 21 March, wine aficionados may participate in a Grand Wine Tasting conducted by world renowned wine critic and journalist, Jancis Robinson at a Thailand exclusive event. Held at Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok’s Royal Ballroom, the event will feature premium wines from around the world as well as a cheese tasting session with famed affineur Hugues de Kerdrel.

In conjunction with Russia Day in June, the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Bangkok will present a celebration of the country’s best exports with a Caviar and Vodka dinner at the Authors’ Lounge, as well as exclusive Vodka offerings at the iconic Bamboo Bar.

Music and dance events

Rolling out throughout 2016, the Italian Jazz Series of exclusive performances will include performances such as Danilo Rea in May, and the Guidi Trio in October.

On 30 May, be sure to catch the Embassy of Italy in Bangkok at the Royal Ballroom as they present a production of Famous Italian Arias by Italian opera singers, accompanied by the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra.

Exclusive exhibitions 

Art enthusiasts will delight in an exhibition of selected works from renowned and emerging Thai contemporary artists who have been featured in the recently launched Thailand Eye: Contemporary Thai Art book. The ongoing exhibition will display from now to the end of May.

During the second half of the year, Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok will be hosting an exclusive week-long exhibition of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit of Thailand’s dresses at Bangkok’s favourite destination for traditional afternoon tea, the Author’s Lounge. The event is presented in conjunction with the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles and includes dresses worn by Her Majesty at the hotel during various events over the years.

140th Anniversary Special Offer

To celebrate its 140th anniversary, Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok also offers guests an exclusive two-night consecutive stay special promotion. The offer includes luxurious accommodation with personal butler service, daily buffet breakfast for two at The Verandah, and afternoon tea for two at the historic Authors’ Lounge.
