National Library Presents “From the Stacks” Exhibition
National Library unveils its rare collection of artefacts to the public for the first time.
The National Library Board (NLB) has recently opened a major exhibition featuring their elusive collection of rare artefacts from Singapore’s history. The “From the Stacks” Exhibition showcases over 100 carefully curated items charting the development of Singapore culture from the 18th century onwards. Running from 30 January to 28 August 2016, the seven-month long exhibition will display rare publications, manuscripts, documents, maps, photographs and more.
Drop by the exhibition with your loved ones to have a glimpse of Singapore’s history first-hand. Must-see items include handwritten letters from Sir Stamford Raffles and his wife – unveiling a lesser-known, personal side of the historical icon.
The exhibition also includes the Lithographed Qur’an – one of the earliest Qur’ans published in Singapore; My Favourite Recipes by Ellice Handy – the first cookbook by a Singaporean author published locally; and the《华夷通语》(Hua yi tong yu) – a Chinese-Malay dictionary published in Singapore for the Hokkien-speaking chinese community; among others.
A series of talks will also be available at the exhibition, inviting participants to learn more about our beloved homeland. One of the highlights include the Conservation Talk by the National Archives of Singapore’s (NAS), which allows participants to learn more about preserving family albums, photographs and documents.
Other interesting talks available at the exhibition include a Heritage Food Talk & Cooking Demonstration by Ms Aziza Ali, who will be sharing about the food she enjoyed during her childhood as well as conduct a cooking demo on one of her prized traditional Malay recipes.
