Pebble Steel Review

After the launch of its original smartwatch, Pebble follows up with a classier looking Pebble Steel.

The purpose of this watch is simple: to pair it with your smartphone to offer app notifications from your wrist without the constant need to take out your phone all the time.

Unlike its sibling the Pebble, the Pebble Steel offers consumers an option that is for a lack of a better word, ‘proper’, with its stylish metallic bezel (in either brushed stainless steel or black matte) giving it the appearance of a more ‘business like’ watch that would go better with your office wear as opposed to the customisable Pebble that looks a tad frivolous.

The original Pebble when it was first conceived was probably created to cater to a more select demographic of younger users who wanted something cool and funky, while the Pebble Steel on the other hand presents to the older crowd a watch that merges functionality with a simplistic and classy design.

With the Pebble Steel, what users would get is a relatively light watch with long-lasting battery (provided you are not hooked on Pixel Miner), an elegant and tough looking stainless steel casing, a durable Corning Gorilla Glass lens that is fingerprint phobic and a solid ecosystem of apps. This makes the Pebble Steel a cool watch that does more than just tell time, which any other watch or smartphone can do. And if an amalgam of digital watch and smartphone apps is what you want, then an amalgam is what you get.

As for customisation, there are a number of watch straps available for the Pebble Steel, such as a leather one or a full metal one to complete the all metallic look if all-out class is what you are after, but my personal favourite is the silicone strap with red stitching that is akin to what one can spot in the cabin of a Volkswagen Golf GTI.
