Savour Homely Asian Flavours At Big Lazy Chop

By  |  0 Comments

If you love your salted egg yolk on XL spare ribs, or know how to appreciate a good pot of homemade Indo Curry, Big Lazy Chop’s array of house-made sauces will certainly entice.

Hidden along Short Street is Big Lazy Chop, a family-friendly laidback Chinese bistro that serves up fresh seafood dishes along with tender meat options. Helmed by Singaporean Head Chef Oh Ah Lek, the bistro was launched late last year and has since pride itself in the preparation of creative house-made sauces (up to 30 different ones!) to complement its homely dishes.

We got to sample some of Big Lazy Chop’s menu highlights:

Handmade Fresh Crab Money Bag

Kick off your meal with the Handmade Fresh Crab Money Bag (SGD 18+), a delicate egg white wrap packed with fresh crab meat and onion stuffing. Made fresh daily with only limited portions, the money bag rests on a light sauce that brings out the flavour of the dish. Light and flavourful – the perfect way to whet your appetite for the big boys.

Wok-Fried XL Crabs (Indo Curry)

If you love crabs, it’s time to get your hands dirty for Big Lazy Chop’s signature XL Crabs (SGD 70+/kg). Each weighing between 800 to 850 grams, pair these Sri Lankan imports with any sauce of your choice – Indo Curry, Black Pepper, Salted Egg, Chilli and Bee Hoon. We had their homemade milky Indo Curry to go along, which is rather spicy as it is flavoured with four types of chilli, lemongrass and curry leaves. Though the milkiness of the curry mutes its fieriness quite a bit, there’s no denying how well the steamed/pan-fried buns go with the curry.

Drunken XL Spare Ribs (Butter Champagne)

Next on the list of things to try at Big Lazy Chop is their XL Spare Ribs. The Drunken XL Spare Ribs (SGD 23+) are cooked in butter beer and drenched in Big Lazy Chop’s Butter Champagne sauce. The sauce leaned more towards the sweeter side due to the addition of passionfruit flesh, while the champagne lent a hint of bitterness. However, don’t get your hopes too high on getting anywhere near “drunk” with this one as the champagne notes are rather mild. It would definitely still work for those who dislike the intense flavour of alcohol in their food.

Saucy XL Spare Ribs (Salted Egg)

A must-try at Big Lazy Chop is their Saucy XL Spare Ribs (SGD 20+) with Salted Egg sauce. This dish really nailed it with its winning combination of spare ribs and savoury salted egg sauce – I mean, almost everything goes well with salted egg am I right? The creamy sauce is packed with flavour and goes perfect with the spare ribs. If there’s ever a more appropriate time to describe a dish as “finger-licking good”, well, this would be it.

Beancurd (Handmade with Fresh Soy Bean Milk)

Another homely, comforting dish to try is their Beancurd (SGD 13+) served Hotplate style – a staple and “family-favourite” at most Chinese restaurants. The silky smooth beancurd is made from fresh soybean milk, and is tossed with omelette and mushroom bits in a dark savoury sauce. I don’t know about you, but nothing quite beats the warmth and familiarity that comes with sizzling beancurd resting on a hotplate.

Fried Chestnut Bars

Not forgetting desserts, Big Lazy Chop’s Fried Chestnut Bars (SGD 8+) are not your conventional Chinese dessert. Served in portions for 2 to 3 pax, the fried chestnut bars feature a crisp exterior that unveils an interesting mix of sweet, sticky and (almost) mushy interior with crunchy chestnut bits embedded within. The multitude of textures makes this dessert an eye-opening one, but do be careful when handling these delicate chestnut bars as they are on the brittle side.

While Big Lazy Chop is located quite centrally, it may be quite a hidden gem as it is located right under a student hostel on Rochor Road.  Nevertheless, it is definitely one of those understated gastronomic finds that will make for a great dining spot for family gatherings or even special occasions.

Big Lazy Chop is located at 1A Short Street #01-04, Singapore 188210. For more information, visit here.
