Portuguese auteur Miguel Gomes showcases his latest work, Arabian Nights in a three-part, six-hour epic set in present-day Portugal.

As the opening film for The O.P.E.N. (a pre-festival to the Singapore International Festival of the Arts), The Arabian Nights Trilogy features the latest work by celebrated Portuguese auteur Miguel Gomes. Taking inspiration from the “Arabian Nights” tale, Gomes skillfully weaves a tapestry of tragicomic tales in his three-part film, exploring the hardship and humanity in present-day Portugal.

Arabian Nights Volume I: The Restless One (125 mins)

The first volume unfolds with unexpected tales about Portuguese life, labour and economic free-fall. Giving dream-logic and clarity to even the most improbable incidents, multiple narrators interweave vivid tales of magical virgins, a talking rooster on trial, a mermaid released from an exploding whale, and a group of impotent economists seeking a cure.

Arabian Nights Volume II: The Desolate One (131 mins)

The next volume features a dark whimsy centred on the escape of a serial killer who gradually becomes a folk hero. Subsequent stories tell of an absurd and seemingly unending trial over crimes that fantastically multiply.

Arabian Nights Volume III: The Enchanted One (125 mins)

Gomes closes with a fascinating blend of delirious fantasy and melancholy poetic realism depicting ancient Babylon to present-day Lisbon. The Enchanted One refers to Scheherazade, who opens the film recounting the romantic tales of the many talented suitors vying for her affection.

For a deeper insight into the fascinating world of present-day Portugal, be sure to catch this three-part film on 25 June at The Projector. Volume I will commence at 3pm, Volume II at 6pm, and Volume III at 8pm.
