The Sardono Retrospective – Expanded Cinema will showcase pioneering master performing artist, Sardono W. Kusumo’s paintings, films and dance choreography through his collection of works.

The Sardono Retrospective traces the artistic oeuvre of Southeast Asia’s pioneering master performing artist, Sardono W. Kusomo. Gain insight into what Sardono has learnt from working and performing with the traditional cultures and arts of Indonesia over the last 50 years .

Having created multiple experimental films exploring a myriad of themes, Sardono has covered village life, Javanese mythology and environmental destruction, and even recently, the Arab Spring. Particularly, Sardono has made an extensive tribute to the great painter Raden Saleh, one of the earliest Asian painters living in Europe. Donning replica clothing, Sardono walked the Parisian streets and boulevards late at night and contemplated its atmosphere and mood in tribute to the painter who lived in the City of Light more than 100 years ago.

Expanded Cinema is part of the Singapore International Festival of Arts (SIFA) 2016, and offers a collection of archive footage, shot with an 8mm camera since 1970. Never before exhibited, this collection reveals the background context behind his famous modern kecak, the amazing monkey dance, which is seen by most tourists who visit Bali Today.

From 13 to 28 August, 11am to 9pm, The Sardono Retrospective – Expanded Cinema will screen at the Malay Heritage Centre.

Admission is free. For more information, visit here.
