Singaporean Travellers Prioritise Relaxation and Security Amid Rising Costs
Despite increasing concerns about the cost of living, travel remains a high priority for Singaporeans, with the Allianz Partners Travel Index revealing that nine in ten plan to travel in the year ahead.
While affordability is a key consideration—73 percent of those not travelling cite cost as a barrier—many travellers are still choosing to focus on rest, relaxation, and peace of mind.
Resorts and wellness experiences top the list of travel motivations, with 74 percent seeking relaxation focused holidays, followed by 50 percent looking for cultural exploration and 43 percent opting for adventure. Most Singaporeans plan to travel within Asia, with 52 percent heading to regional destinations, while Oceania accounts for 19 percent of planned trips.

Travel Budgets and Spending Trends
Singaporeans have varied travel budgets, with most planning to spend between SGD 1,200 and over SGD 3,000 dollars per trip. Asia remains a top choice, particularly for budget-conscious travellers, as lower-cost trips tend to align with regional destinations.
Those over 50 are almost twice as likely as younger travellers to spend more than SGD 3,000 dollars on their holidays, indicating a strong preference for premium travel experiences among older travellers.
Compared to other Asia-Pacific markets, Singaporeans tend to budget less for travel, ranking behind Australia, New Zealand, China, and Hong Kong SAR in overall spending. India and Japan allocate the least for travel within the region.
Travel Insurance: A Growing Priority
Beyond relaxation, Singaporeans are increasingly prioritising protection against unforeseen travel disruptions. Nearly 87 percent plan to purchase travel insurance, with personal safety (59 percent), falling ill (56 percent), and concerns over scams and theft (55 percent) being top motivators. Flight cancellations, delays, and extreme weather events also rank high among concerns.
Most travellers purchase insurance directly from providers (55 percent), with 17 percent opting for a travel website and 9 percent choosing coverage through airlines, hotels, or tour operators. Those spending more than SGD 3,000 dollars on their trips are 24 percent more likely to purchase travel insurance than those budgeting under SGD 1,100 dollars.

Social Media and Word of Mouth Drive Travel Choices
Travel inspiration increasingly comes from digital platforms, with 67 percent of Singaporeans relying on recommendations from family and friends. YouTube is the leading social media source for travel planning (69 percent), followed by Instagram (56 percent) and Facebook (53 percent).
Vinay Surana, Managing Director of Asia Pacific, Middle East, and Africa at Allianz Partners, commented on the findings, noting that while cost-conscious travel is shaping decisions, the desire for relaxation and security remains strong. He stressed the importance of being prepared, advising that travel insurance offers vital peace of mind in an unpredictable industry where challenges such as flight delays, lost luggage, and illness can impact travellers unexpectedly.
