Traveloka Study Reveals Changing Travel Trends in APAC
Asia-Pacific (APAC) travel trends are continually evolving. Traveloka, in collaboration with YouGov, has released a groundbreaking study titled “Travel Redefined: Understanding and Catering to the Diverse Needs of APAC Travelers”.
Conducted across nine countries with nearly 12,000 respondents, this study provides deep insights into the shifting habits and preferences of APAC travellers, offering valuable information for both travel enthusiasts and industry stakeholders.
Domestic Travel on the Rise
One of the standout findings is the growing preference for domestic travel across several APAC countries. In markets like Thailand, Indonesia, and Japan, approximately 70 percent of travelers are choosing to explore their own backyards. Affordability, convenience, and safety are the primary motivators behind this trend. For instance, 65 percent of Japanese travelers prefer domestic trips due to perceived safety, while affordability is a key driver for 70 percent of travelers in Thailand and Indonesia.

Varied Motivations Across Countries
Travel motivations vary widely across the region. In Singapore, 38 percent of travelers prioritise urban escapes for rest and recharge. Meanwhile, in Indonesia, 47 percent are drawn to nature and adventure, gravitating towards mountains and national parks. Japanese travelers are inclined towards wellness and cultural experiences, with 40 percent opting for spa retreats and historical sites.

Digital Platforms Revolutionise Travel Planning
Digital travel platforms have become indispensable in the planning process for APAC travelers. A significant 53 percent of respondents in Indonesia and Singapore rely on these platforms to book accommodations, transportation, and activities. Trust in digital solutions is high, with 83 percent expressing moderate to high confidence in the security and reliability of these platforms.

Sustainable Travel on the Rise
Sustainability is increasingly shaping travel choices in APAC. Over 80 percent of respondents in India, Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia express a preference for sustainable travel options. However, barriers remain, such as the cost of sustainable options and the difficulty in locating them.
