What’s Next? Singapore Writers Festival Explores the ‘Shape of Things to Come’
In a world that seems to be changing faster than ever, we’re all asking the same question: what does the future hold?
From 7 to 16 November, the Singapore Writers Festival (SWF) is dedicating its 28th edition to exploring that very idea with its theme, Shape of Things to Come. Organised by Arts House Group, the festival invites us to imagine a world that is more inclusive, inventive, and deeply human, all through the powerful lens of literature.
This year’s edition boasts an impressive line-up of over 300 local and international presenters across more than 200 programmes, sparking conversations grounded in both lived and imagined experiences.
Literary Stars Descend on Singapore
Headlining the festival are some of the world’s most celebrated literary talents. Fans of sharp, contemporary fiction will be thrilled to see R.F. Kuang, the powerhouse author behind bestsellers like Babel and Yellowface. Joining her is award-winning food writer Fuchsia Dunlop, whose work has transformed the West’s understanding of Chinese cuisine [added context].
The line-up also features British journalist and author Sathnam Sanghera, who tackles complex issues of history and identity, alongside acclaimed poets Victoria Chang and Raymond Antrobus. Together, these distinctive voices will share their unique perspectives on what the future might look like.
A Spotlight on Sci-Fi and Singapore’s Story
Tapping directly into the festival’s theme, two new tracks are being introduced. The Sci-Fi Spotlight takes centre stage, featuring visionary authors Hao Jingfang (郝景芳) and Ken Liu, who are known for pushing the boundaries of the literary imagination and crafting worlds yet to come.
Closer to home, the SG60 Homage track offers a timely reflection on our national identity as Singapore approaches its 60th anniversary [added context]. These new additions run alongside returning festival favourites, including SWF Playground for families, the regionally focused SEA xChange, and the Youth Fringe, ensuring there are innovative ways for everyone to engage with storytelling.
Digital Festival Passes and tickets for selected programmes can be purchased from the Singapore Writers Festival website.
