Agoda Reveals Japanese “Solo Travel” Trends for 2026
Solo travel is no longer a niche choice for Japanese adventurers; it is becoming an everyday preference.
New data from Agoda reveals that demand for traveling alone is expanding steadily, with domestic interest surging by 17 percent year-on-year, outpacing the 11 percent growth seen in international travel.
The data, which compares search activity from the full year of 2025 against 2024, shows a clear shift toward flexible, self-paced itineraries both within Japan and across the region.
Top International Escapes for Soloists

For those venturing abroad, Japanese solo travelers prioritize safety, ease of access, and robust transportation. The top five searched cities include:
- Seoul: The most popular choice, particularly for travelers focused on beauty, wellness, and efficient short-stay experiences.
- Bangkok
- Taipei
- Hong Kong
- Honolulu
These destinations are highly regarded as reassuring options for first-time solo travelers due to their proximity to Japan and well-developed infrastructure.
Domestic Trends: The Rise of Regional Hubs

While major urban centers like Tokyo, Osaka, and Fukuoka remain high-volume favorites, the most significant growth is happening in regional cities. Travelers are increasingly seeking out areas where they can avoid crowds and explore at their own leisure.
Fast-Growing Domestic Destinations:
- Chiba: Up 67% year-on-year
- Takamatsu: Up 62% year-on-year
- Okayama: Up 46% year-on-year
- Izumisano: Up 41% year-on-year
- Saitama: Up 40% year-on-year
Notably, many of these high-growth cities are situated near major airports. This suggests that solo travelers are choosing these locations not just for local tourism, but as strategic and convenient gateways for further international travel. Takamatsu and Okayama, in particular, are praised for their balance of tourism resources and modern convenience.
“In Japan, solo travel is becoming established… as an everyday choice,” shared Tadashi Ikai, Senior Country Director for Japan at Agoda. “Agoda will continue to provide accommodation options and travel products that cater to the diverse needs of solo travelers”.
