The Macallan Reveals the Edition No. 1

The Macallan has a new expression in town. Named the Edition No. 1, it is the first of a new series of annual releases that is distinguished by its unique selection of oak casks.

Designed to showcase the breadth of The Macallan’s oak styles, the Edition No.1 exhibits characteristics ranging from a light note to darker, richer flavours.

Master Whisky Maker Bob Dalgarno personally selected an atypical spectrum of casks to showcase a lesser-seen side of The Macallan. The inaugural expression is matured in eight distinct European and American oak cask styles to create a rich and multifaceted whisky.

The casks were supplied by Tevasa, Vasyma, Hudosa and Jose Y Miguel Martin, including 500 litre puncheons that make up 19% of Edition No. 1, 250 litre hogsheads that comprise 23%, and 500 litre butts that make up 58%. Gonzalez Byass first-fill butts are also used for imparting a distinctive green fruitiness.

According to Delgarno, around 80% of the character of The Macallan is comes from the oak cask in which it matures in. Therefore different casks and cask styles will impart a specific influence on the whisky, adding their own distinctive character to the final mix.

“So the idea was to explore more intricately how each cask style could influence the whisky and yet work well together in harmony,” said Delgarno. “With Edition No. 1, there was the opportunity to take a step back and think about what we share, to inform those people who follow and appreciate The Macallan.

The Edition No. 1 stands as a proud showcase of Macallan’s cask policy in action – they oversee the production of its own casks from oak sourcing to finished, seasoned casks.

Bottled at a higher strength of 48% for a fuller, richer flavour, The Macallan Edition No. 1 will retail for S$190 (before GST). If you want to have a taste of the Edition No.1, join the upcoming Toast The Macallan event from 31 March to 3 April 2016.
