the Active Age (AA): When are the traditional durian seasons typically for SG and MY?
Josiah Jeremy (JJ): Based on past observations, the durian season typically starts at the end of May. Historically, the durian season usually commences in the first week of June and continues until July.
However, the traditional durian season has undergone a significant change due to changes in the weather conditions. It now spans a period of approximately six months, divided into two distinct three-month intervals.
The first period begins in June and extends until August, while the second period spans from September to either January or February, depending on the prevailing weather conditions.
AA: Are there increasingly more out of season durians available?
JJ: No, not exactly. During the off-season, the availability of fresh durians is severely limited. Nevertheless, because of the strong relationship with our suppliers, we still manage to secure small batches of durians for our customers.
AA: How do they make these off season durians available?
In rare instances, certain durian trees may exhibit early ripening which facilitates the accessibility and availability of durians. With strong relationships with our suppliers, we are able to procure these fresh durians in smaller batches for our customers despite the off season.
AA: What are the main types of durian and their taste profiles?
During the Durian Season, Golden Moments imports a wide range of durian varieties from our trusted suppliers to meet the demands of the market.
However, it is more common for us to encounter.
Mao Shan Wang (MSW) is often known as the “King of Fruits” because they are known to be one of the creamiest, richest, most buttery, bittersweet durians compared to all the other durian varieties.
D13 is affordable and perfect for children and first-time durian tasters due to their ideal balance of 80 percent sweetness and 20 percent bitterness, with a thick, creamy texture that’s similar to a custard bun. While it starts off slightly watery, the flavour gradually intensifies, culminating in a satisfyingly bitter finish that’s complemented by a refreshing citrusy note.
D17 is a unique durian that hails from Bekok Segamat and is truly one-of-a-kind. It boasts a distinctive combination of bitter flavours with a pleasant coffee note, which has earned it the nickname “coffee durian.” With an extremely watery yet thick texture and noticeably wrinkled skin, it bears
a striking resemblance to the renowned Johor XO durian. However, it’s not for the faint of heart as its intense bitterness and watery texture may prove challenging for some.
Red Prawn has a creamy texture and savoury custard flavour that lingers on the palate. These are highly sought after.
AA: What types of drinks do we pair with durians, from traditional to fun?
JJ: Due to the inherent heatiness of durians, it is customary to complement their consumption with beverages that possess cooling properties. This practice aims to counterbalance the heatiness of the fruit. Hence, it is not uncommon to see people to traditionally pair with drinks such as coconut water or even cooling water due to their cooling properties.

This traditional practice stems from the belief that durians
possess properties that can positively influence reproductive health and increase the likelihood of conception.
Contrary to popular belief, durians have zero cholesterol and instead have heart-healthy monounsaturated fats which can help to lower levels of bad cholesterol in our body.
Furthermore, durians help to reduce the risk of cancer as it has a high amount of antioxidants like polyphenols which help to illuminate free radicals from the body thus reducing risk of cancer.
