Philips encourages adopting good oral hygiene habits to keep our teeth and gums healthy in support of World Oral Health Day.

Globally, around 3.5 billion people suffer from preventable oral
diseases, that include conditions such as tooth decay and gum disease. Prevention and early detection of oral disease remains key to avoid any negative repercussions on the rest of your body due to oral health issues.

The World Health Organization has adopted a resolution about maintaining a healthy mouth to reduce chances of developing wider health issues. Such health issues have been demonstrated by numerous studies that show a strong link between poor oral health and chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

Age is also a factor to consider when it comes to oral health. As one ages, teeth will shift and lose bone mass while gums will recede. Tooth loss can occur as our teeth enamel wears down or due to long-term dental neglect.

In Singapore, tooth decay and periodontal disease are among some of the most common dental diseases.

Maintaining healthy teeth and gums is a lifelong commitment that starts with good personal oral hygiene habits.

Dr Leroy Kiang, a dentist at Orchard Scotts Dental shares the following tips on preventing your teeth and gums from aging faster than your body, and how you can maintain a state of optimal oral hygiene.
