Visit By Haircare Expert Sheds Light On Caffeine

A recent visit by Prof. Christoph Abels helped shed new light on caffeine in terms of hair growth preservation and hair loss prevention.

Having being sold in Singapore for more than a year, Alpecin has steadily gained traction in the haircare segment in Singapore and has received positive clinical results, as backed by studies carried out by Germany’s University Of Jena. The studies indicate that caffeine, apart from being a widely consumed stimulant drug in beverages such as coffee and tea, helps boost the growth of hair follicles, which led to the conclusion that caffeine is indeed a hair growth stimulant. This has also been backed up by visiting Professor, Dr. Christoph Abels, who was in town recently to conduct a talk on hair loss and how to mitigate the effects of Alopecia.

During the talk, Dr Abels also highlighted that hair growth is not significantly affected by ageing but rather the fact that our hair’s growth cycle starts to slow down. He addressed common misconceptions about ageing and hair loss as well emphasizing that hair thinning starts due to the weathering of the hair shaft as we age and not due to the reduction of hair follicles. He also shared some tips for maintaining healthy hair as one ages, such as refraining from using chemicals or heating tools as well as avoiding sleeping with wet hair as it weakens the hair shaft.

As for the benefits of applying caffeine to our hair, research has indicated that it has the ability to combat the effects of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a form of testosterone that is one of the main causes of male pattern baldness. Due to the hair follicle’s sensitivity to DHT – the follicles shrink, resulting in a shorter lifespan and the abnormal production of hair, this condition is also known as Alopecia.
