Avenue Joffre Opens At Resorts World Sentosa

Avenue Joffre launches its first branch in Singapore to offer diners nostalgic Chinese culinary favourites.

In partnership with leading Hong Kong hospitality group – Epicurean Group, Avenue Joffre has recently opened its doors at Crockfords Towers, Resorts World Sentosa (RWS).

The dining establishment was named after an area located within Shanghai’s French Concession in the 1930s and 40s where members of high society would mingle for fashion, arts and culture. It was also during this time that a Cantonese filmmaker opened up the house he owned along this avenue for gatherings and social activities, and the house became known for the delicious Shanghainese cuisine his personal chef served and the Cantonese dishes the filmmaker prepared himself. This evolved into a gathering place where locals would exchange and showcase cuisines from all over China.

Avenue Joffre takes on the tradition of this legendary house, offering authentic comfort food from various provinces and cities of China including Zhejiang, Szechuan, Beijing, and Guangdong. The restaurant’s interiors are inspired by the Filmmaker’s House, and celebrates the Chinese movie industry back in the 30s and 40s. Adorned with photographs and memorabilia from that era, guests will be transported back to a time where Chinese art and culture thrived.

Here are some of the signature dishes we tried:

Steamed Shanghai Pork Dumpling

A must-have starter at every Chinese cuisine restaurant would definitely be the Pork Dumpling (or Xiao Long Bao). Featuring a standard pork filling with soup wrapped in a delicate dumpling skin, this popular Chinese dimsum dish is indeed comfort food to many, though the dumplings are nothing out of the ordinary.

The Steamed Shanghai Pork Dumplings are priced at SGD 7.

Hong Kong Style Roasted Suckling Pig

The Hong Kong Style Roasted Suckling Pig is priced from SGD 18 for a regular sized portion.

Honey Glazed Barbecued Pork

Served in thick chunky slices, the fragrant barbecued pork is glazed with a sweet sauce to bring a homely taste with every bite. Reminiscent of the local popular favourite charsiew meat, this barbecued pork is best paired with white rice.

The Hong Kong Glazed Barbecued Pork is priced from SGD 14 for a small plate.

Szechuan Poached Sliced Fish in Chili Oil

One of the highlights of the menu is the Szechuan Poached Sliced Fish in Chili Oil. While the blaze of red from the massive amounts of chili, Szechuan pepper and oil may intimidate at first glance, the fish slices are surprisingly not as spicy as one would imagine. If you’re not a fan of the “Ma La” Chinese sauce that numbs the taste buds, you’ll enjoy this dish as the “Ma La” spices are not too overwhelming. The thinly sliced poached fish are tender and slippery smooth, making it pleasant to eat as they melt in the mouth.

The Szechuan Poached Sliced Fish in Chili Oil is priced from SGD 38 for a small bowl.

Braised Tiger King Prawns with Homemade Tofu

This dish is a must-try and features a fresh and juicy tiger king prawn that is nicely complemented with a tasty XO sauce made in-house. The dish also comes with unique homemade tofu with shredded spinach embedded within.

The Braised Tiger King Prawns with Homemade Tofu is priced at SGD 22 per person.

Other signature dishes at Avenue Joffre include the Cantonese Doubled-boiled Chicken Consommé with Sea Whelk and Morel Mushroom, Stir-fried Diced Chicken with Dried Red Chili, Homemade Szechuan Pickles with Chicken Feet, Roasted Peking Duck, Stir-fried Crab with Glutinous Rice, among others.

Avenue Joffre is located at 26 Sentosa Gateway, #02-137/138/139, Singapore 098138 (Entry by Festival Walk and Crockfords Tower).
