[Experience] The reimagined We Will Rock You electrifies in Singapore

By  |  0 Comments

The We Will Rock You rock-n-roll musical opens in Singapore at the Esplanade until 22 January.

The musical is directed and choreographed by Olivier Award nominee, Nick Winston. The production has been re-imagined from the iconic Ben Elton & Queen collaboration, that has been watched by over 20 million people worldwide.

Science fiction isn’t a genre you get to explore often in musical theatre, and I have had so much fun bringing this dystopian world to life with my extraordinary cast and creative team. I hope the Singapore audience enjoys what we’ve worked on to bring them!

Singapore is the second stop for the musical following its premiere in Manila in November 2022. GMG Productions will bring We Will Rock You to New Zealand in June 2023, after Singapore’s season.

While the original production has been seen by over 20 million people worldwide, we know the Singapore audience loves Queen and Queen’s music, and we can’t wait to thrill them with our brand-new set and costume design. Our director has also brought a modern vibe to the musical and we promise that the 2023 update is one musical-rock-concert that everybody will enjoy.

What’s the story about?

We Will Rock You shows a society where algorithms predict every human preference, and culture is controlled by an organisation that determines what is ‘right’ for the masses.

The musical tells the story of two revolutionaries (“Bohemians”), their escape from a dystopian society, and their adventures as they (re)discover and save rock’n’roll music, in a post-apocalyptic world.

The new We Will Rock You is a musical for our time: a fast-paced, fist-pumping, foot-stomping anthem to individuality.

We Will Rock You

This brand-new international rock-powered production features 24 of Queen’s biggest hits, including Killer Queen, Under Pressure, We Are the Champions, Radio Ga Ga, I Want to Break Free, Don’t Stop Me Now Bohemian Rhapsody, Another One Bites the Dustand, of coursethe inimitable We Will Rock You.

3 things to look out for in We Will Rock you

Don’t come expecting a rehash of Queen’s story. While the musical uses many of their songs to tell a story, this is not the story of the band. Instead, it’s a story about people rediscovering their individuality and power, while having Queen as their soundtrack (perhaps playing in their head all this time). Expect to see the heroes journey from hopelessness and fear to optimism and the reclaiming of their power.

While the musical isn’t about Queen or any specific singer and band, there are a whole bunch of easter eggs littered throughout the performance alluding to song titles, lyrics and behaviours of many famous personalities as well as recognisable scenes from science fiction shows.

Audiences from a pre-internet era will enjoy seeing the Bohemians’ bible and realise how it inspires in the us both nostalgia, humour and a sympathy for the people from that dystopian society in the musical.
