Google’s Virtual Walk Back in Time

As an iconic moment approaches this weekend, Google has prepared a couple of digital tributes at the Google Shophouse.

The Singapore Time Walk app lets you explore historic landmarks like the former City Hall and Old Supreme Court, in new ways made possible by tech. With the app, you can get more information about the location, as well as interact with the landmarks to see historic images and animations of the location overlaid on the present view. At the Google Shophouse located at 63 Spottiswode Park Road, visitors can learn more about the app, as well as try it out for themselves.

The app was built in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, the National Heritage Board and the Urban Redevelopment Authority, and features many images and content from national archives. It will be further developed to feature the Jubilee Walk this year.

The Shophouse also features a collection of paintings, photos, videos, and other cultural objects to celebrate the Golden Jubilee, thanks to The National Heritage Board (NHB). Among the NHB’s collections is “Great Peranakans: Fifty Remarkable Lives”, which showcases the impact of the Straits Chinese in the growth and development of Singapore.

They will be joined by the Singapore Art Museum (SAM) and Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) who will be bringing artwork, artifacts, and stories from Singapore online. The URA launched “The Story of Telok Ayer”, an exhibit that explores the historic Telok Ayer area using photos and Street View.

The Shophouse is located at 63 Spottiswoode Park Road, and will be open to the public anytime between 10am – 5pm during the National Day weekend (August 7-10).
