Huawei’s Trifecta of Mobile Goodness

Huawei’s steady rise in the world of smartphones has come to a head with the release of three flagship devices here: the Mate S smartphone, the Google Nexus 6P, and the Watch.

It took a while, but Huawei’s steady rise is no accident – the phones offer innovative features, and there’s precious little to fault in terms of workmanship and materials. The trio of flagship devices here is another excellent showcase of their abilities.

Huawei Mate S

Huawei Mate S

Sleek and well-made, the Mate S is as good as any phone good money can get. It measures a mere 7.2mm thick, and the side edges a mere 2.65mm. The fine work on the metal unibody screams premium, the face of the phone is shielded with Gorilla Glass, while expensive sapphire crystal is used to prevent damage to the rear camera.

The Mate S offers excellent hardware such as a super-fast fingerprint sensor, a 13-megapixel rear camera with a four-colour sensor (usual is three colours), a 5.5-inch AMOLED display and a three-microphone array for directional sound recording.

Available now for pre-order in 32GB and 64GB in Luxurious Gold for S$999 (limited to 1,000 units in Singapore). Pre-orders can be made at the Huawei Flagship Store, the Huawei Experience Store @ Sim Lim Square, Gadget World Jurong Point, and Jim Communications & Electronics @ Suntec.

Google Nexus 6P

Google Nexus 6P

Google’s large flagship device is made by Huawei this time, and you can always count on the flagship Nexus to have the best features: front-facing stereo speakers, a king-of-the-hill processor in the form of the Snapdragon 810, cameras with larger pixels for better image quality and with 4K video recording and high frame rate slow motion capabilities; Nexus Imprint, a really speedy fingerprint sensor, and a reversible USB (Type-C) port with fast charging.

The 5.7-inch, 2560×1440 resolution, AMOLED display is a real treat, and lest you worry about battery life, a large 3,450 mAh battery is built in to ensure that the phone isn’t always calling for a battery pack.

The Nexus 6P will come in two colours – Aluminum and Graphite – and will be available for pre-order now (till 11 November) exclusively from Lazada at a special preorder price of S$899 (64GB) and S$999 (128GB). The official launch is in late November, and will retail for S$949 (64GB) and S$1,049 (128GB).

Huawei Watch

Huawei Watch

This classy-looking watch is powered by Android Wear, Google’s platform for smart watches (which means you can use it for iPhones too), and follows traditional watch conventions in adopting a classic 42mm diameter look. Available in gold, silver and black, you can easily mix and match with various straps (18mm) to get the look and feel you desire.

The large 1.4-inch touch-sensitive AMOLED display is protected by scratch-proof sapphire crystal, and housed within a stainless steel frame. The 400×400 pixel resolution gives the display a vibrancy to match the aesthetics. The watch also sports a heart rate monitor (PPG sensor) and a six-axis motion sensor so you can track daily physical activities.

The Huawei Watch is available at the Huawei Flagship store in the following configurations:

  • Classic (stainless steel finish) with black leather strap: S$549
  • Classic with steel mesh strap: S$649 (available end November)
  • Classic with steel link bracelet: S$649
