Review: The Secretlab Omega

If you like the look of a racing seat, then good news, you can have it at your desk. What’s more, racing seats won’t feel as good as this…

The Secretlab Omega is the result of how positive user feedback could lead to better products being made for the community. In this case, it’s the gaming community, but really, it’s for anyone and everyone who spends long hours in front of the computer.

If you think that such chairs are garish, you’d be right. However, Secretlab also offers the Omega Stealth, which is a more subtle variant that comes in a neat shade of matte black. In its muted form, the Omega Stealth works out to be a much better alternative to the office chairs we use at work. Plus, it’ll look utterly cool to rest your shoulders on its broad wings while filing your papers.

The contours on racing car seats are designed to conform to the human body and is the premise on which Secretlab has chosen to model the Omega after. There are hints of racing sportiness about the Omega with its carbon-fibre textured sides, aesthetically enhanced by streams of red stitching. The extra-thick cold-cure foam used underneath the waterproof PU leather underlies its premium status. It requires a more expensive method of manufacture, with individual mould for each of the cushions, contrary to mass-produced blocks of foam that are trimmed down to requirements. Most manufacturers make use of this to design their automobile seats as it is better at retaining form and shape. Brilliant for Secretlab to provide such frills for the Omega.

The Omega has a range of adjustable features. The pair of armrests allows for a four-way adjustment for either side-to-side or back-to-front options, including height. The backrest is reclinable with a lever mechanism to lock in your desired tilt angle, along with the standard height adjustments.

The five-spoke aluminum base works fine with its PU rubber wheels and doesn’t feel flimsy. More attention could have been given to the lumbar column (the back rest) though, as it feels too hard and doesn’t offer much support for your lower back. However, they did include a lumbar cushion, as well as a neck cushion, to help ease any possible discomfort.

With all of the comfort that comes from the cushions and soft padding, it actually does more harm than good. The fear of unwittingly slipping into an afternoon nap on the Omega instead of starting on piles of impending work is a real one.

The Omega should function adequately in terms of comfortable and durability, more so if you are into the flashier aspects of putting yourself into the driver’s seat.

Secretlab’s Omega Stealth currently retails at SGD529 at their website.
