Save Your Vision With Blackmores Lutein Defence

Blackmores Singapore has just announced the launch of Lutein Defence.

The supplement is a new nutritional supplement that supports healthy eye function amongst the elderly and protects against age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which is among the top four causes of blindness here in Singapore.

AMD typically affects those above 50 years of age. Individuals may first notice a blurring of central vision that is most apparent when performing visually detailed tasks such as reading and sewing. As the disease progresses, blind spots form within central vision and in most cases, if one eye has macular degeneration, the other eye will also develop the disease. Research has also found that elderly Singaporeans with vision impairments are three times more likely to have problems in mobility and in conducting activities of daily living and also twice as likely to be anxious or depressed than those with normal vision. However, there is a growing body of evidence which suggest that the consumption of lutein and zeaxanthin might keep the macular in its optimal state.

Blackmores’ Lutein Defence contains a novel formulation of lutein and zeaxanthin dietary carotenoids, which form the protective macular pigment of the retina in the eye. The increased density of this layer helps to filter high-energy blue light, reduces light-induced damage to the macular and helps protect the macular against changes by reducing oxidative damage. Research has also shown that both carotenoids have the ability to take in free radicals, thus reducing damage or inflammation to eye tissue and delaying the onset of age-related eye conditions. Moreover, both lutein and zeaxanthin cannot be manufactured by the body and thereforemust be obtained from one’s diet.

“Access to good eye care options is more important than ever as our society ages. Our pioneers and silver generation are also more active and need to protect their vision to live their golden years to the fullest, “ said Chua Kay Tse, Blackmores Naturopath Health Educator and Senior Training Manager Singapore. “Lutein Defence is a good choice for seniors aged 50 and above, especially for those who consume less leafy greens or are constantly exposed to excessive sunlight.”
