SIFA 2016 (The O.P.E.N): Ibsen: Ghosts

Treading the extreme border of documentary performance, Markus&Markus’ Ibsen: Ghosts features a radical performance on euthanasia.

Using the same theme from Henrik Ibsen’s original “Ghosts”, where the character Oswald asks his mother to help him commit suicide, German theatre collective, Markus&Markus explores this concept in their radical documentary performance.

Following the life of 81-year-old Margot, whom they cast as their very own “Oswald”, Markus&Markus reanimates her through photos, videos and letters. The gut-wrenching work was put together by spending every day of April 2014 with her before she travelled to Switzerland in May to die on her own terms.

As Margot says: “As long as my story is being told, I am not really dead.” Unsettling, challenging and haunting, Ibsen: Ghosts reveals a poignant reflection on life’s meaning. As one of the documentary performances featured in The O.P.E.N. (a pre-festival to the Singapore International Festival of Arts), join Margot on her journey as she organises her affairs and bids her loved ones farewell.

Ibsen: Ghosts will show at 8pm on 6, 7 and 8 July at the SOTA Studio Theatre.

Admission is free with the O.P.E.N Pass. Visit here for more information.
