Anytime Fitness opens 3,000th gym worldwide at Selegie in Singapore

The first Anytime Fitness gym in Singapore opened in 2013 in Woodlands and the brand continues to look for opportunities to bring fitness and gym access to the heartlands.

At the opening, co-Founder and President, Mr Dave Mortensen and Maurice Levine, Master Franchisee for Asia shared that the decision to open in residential neighbourhoods was meant to keep “fitness affordable and approachable” and “lower the barriers to a healthier lifestyle” by making the locations accessible and the environment (within the gyms) friendly.

Anytime Fitness operates on a membership basis, where customers pay a monthly fee at any of the gyms nationwide. The member will be limited to the gym they registered at (called a home gym) for the first 30 days. Thereafter, they can have access to any of the 25 gyms in Singapore and 3,000 worldwide anytime through their own security key. Membership fees start at SGD 88.

All gyms provide equipment, programmes, classes as well as support by certified personal trainers. Members can choose to use the gym anytime they like, to accommodate their lifestyles, even if it calls for a 2am treadmill run. Importantly, Anytime Fitness gyms value safety and have 24/7 security cameras installed onsite, private bathrooms and showers (vs. saved spaces) and secured access to the gyms.

For a list of locations in Singapore, their website lists all the 25 gyms throughout the nation.

We speak with Andrea Bell (AB), a Club Owner/Operator with Anytime Fitness Singapore about the trends she sees at her gyms on more people looking to keep and stay fit . Andrea manages five Anytime Fitness gyms across Singapore.

AA: What’s the demographic breakdown of Anytime Fitness gyms in Singapore?

AB: We do not have a specific target age group as we are in the business of helping all people overcome the barriers to a healthy lifestyle.

AA: Will Anytime Fitness be creating training/work-out programmes such as the Vitality example from Hong Kong?

AB: Absolutely! Our certified Personal Trainers are there to ensure all our members are getting the most out of their workout by creating programmes designed for each individual member, if required, and by creating dynamic programmes such as Vitality.

AA: How can active agers benefit from becoming a member of a gym with multiple locations?

AB: Anytime Fitness genuinely cares for the wellbeing of people, and our gyms are designed to remove the barriers to a healthier lifestyle. We provide a supportive environment in which members are able to achieve their fitness goals and enjoy healthier, happier lives.

Other than the fact that we are open round-the-clock, we are also focused on community and we truly want to see people get results and get themselves to a healthier place.

That is why our location strategy is about taking the gym to the suburban areas, as we have gyms in various neighborhoods in Singapore, because we want to give people convenience, flexibility, and lower the barriers for people not wanting to go to the gym because it’s far from their place.

For active agers, getting to work out at a location near their place gives them more incentive to stay active anytime of the day. We are also seeing many of them use the gym between 9am – 12pm.

AA: Do gym trainers move across gyms owned by different gym owners?

AB: No, each Club Manager and Personal Trainer is based in their own club.  They build strong relationships with our members, who not only become like family members, but then allows them to ensure they know exactly what the members need, stay motivated and are able to achieve or maintain their healthy lifestyle.
